Author: Chris McGreavy, CERN The video presents two open challenges for robots to reach and carry out maintenance tasks close to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) beamline: Collider Instrument Maintenance and Force-Controlled Sampling in Constrained Locations. Today both can only be done by a person. The first involves working safely alongside people in a cluttered, hard-to-reach area, and the second involves taking samples in locations that people can’t easily enter. Both are shown in CERN’s full-scale mock-up of the LHC tunnel.
